  1. “Breaking down the stereotypes in archaeology” needs to find real stereotypes. The antiquaries, indeed procuring artefacts for their collections, go back a lot further, at least to the 18th century, but they formed the basis of modern archaeology. What changed was a more scientific approach to excavation, such as by Pitt-Rivers, but that too is older than Wheeler. What made it hard for pioneer archaeologists was a reputation for unsubstantiated conjecture, often built around obscure literary sources, but also badly executed digs. Modern excavation techniques and building up a comparative record made the change in approach and provided credibility. However where there is no excavation, or excavation results are disappointing, modern archaeology resorts to conjecture (and not always informed conjecture). Doing that makes them no different from 19th century antiquarians making wild assertions. You need to be fair to all the inputs to archaeology’s past and not simply create a mythical progenitor of modern archaeology to offset the Indiana Jones type adventurer. I wrote about this in a book “Fake Heritage-solving mysteries” in 2022.

    1. This article is about Hollywood representations based on a period of archaeology known as culture historical archaeology, which is outdated now. This has been written about lots in peer reviewed papers. This representation of archaeology is the one continously seen on screen and in other medium, much to the detriment in the field I work in. This is what the article is about. I noticed you plugged your self published book, but respectfully going to disagree with you here.

      1. It shouldn’t stop you taking a balanced and considered view of how archaeology evolved rather than creating a comfortable fiction. I did indeed plug my book, as you say, but it does review a number of processes that have since been brushed under the carpet by modern archaeologists. Wouldn’t hurt to consider a broader range of antecedents to modern archaeology.
